In consumer research, general population samples are often used when the real target should be category buyers, not to mention that loyal customers’ preferences differ from those of new ones trying the product for the first time.
First of all, when recruiting, prepare a well-defined profile of the real decision-maker in the purchase scenario that you want to model.
And after that, be very selective. The quality of respondents is the basis of everything else.
5. Weak Design and Black-Box Outputs
Two technical mistakes tend to go hand in hand. One of them is a poorly planned experiment where you don’t use the full orthogonal design, so you can’t even separate the effect of one attribute from the other, and therefore, your part-worth utilities are unreliable.
The other is the treatment of those utilities as the last product. Part-worth utilities are only the means to an end. Do not make decisions based on raw utilities. These need to be translated back into a predictive, probabilistic model to be correctly applied.
The actual thing you deliver is the market simulation: what happens to the share of the market if you increase the price, add a feature, or remove an attribute? That’s where conjoint data really works its magic, but only if someone knows how to create and interpret the simulation.
Link every conjoint research to a particular decision before you do it. If you are unable to identify the compromise the research is supposed to address, it is not ready for the field.

Run ten to fifteen interviews before building the survey. Use the language customers use. Attributes that never surface in interviews need a strong justification to include.
Keep the Design Tight and the Audience Specific
Tie each attribute and levels to a decision and potential market scenario. Be as parsimonious as possible. Minimize to only the most critical prohibited pairs. Ensure your screener is built around the real buyer’s job title, purchase authority, and category usage. No shortcuts on respondent quality.
Plan the Simulation Before You Field
Know which market scenarios you will model and how you will present findings to whoever needs to act on them. Research without a clear downstream use is just overhead.
